    Product assessment for imperceptible characteristics like environmental impact, healthfulness, naturalness, and fairness is a helpful tool in product innovation and for enhancing socially responsible conduct. In this study we apply multiple criteria analysis for the assessment of fresh tomatoes in terms of consumer perceptions regarding the above characteristics. The generated indices provide an explicit and comprehensive representation of consumer perceptions. Existing tomato products from the Dutch market are ranked alongside (reasonable conjectures of) potential products to be developed with the use of plant genomics technology. The results are interpreted to provide insights into the socially optimal use of (plant genomics) technology for fresh tomato production.     The effect of cultural orientation and leadership style on self- versus other-oriented organizational citizenship behavior in Turkey and the Netherlands

    This paper investigated the effects of a paternalistic and empowering leadership style on organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) in an experimental design using 100 Turkish and 100 Dutch students who held part-time jobs. Confirming our expectations, a paternalistic leadership style had a more positive effect on job dedication and organizational support in Turkey than in the Netherlands. Contradicting our expectations, an empowering leadership style did not have a more positive effect on any of the OCB dimensions in the Netherlands than it did in Turkey. However, in the Netherlands an empowering leadership style had a stronger effect on interpersonal facilitation, job dedication, and organizational support than a paternalistic leadership style. Paternalistic and empowering leadership styles both had positive effects on OCB dimensions in Turkey. As expected, collectivism moderated the relationship between paternalistic leadership style and other oriented OCB (i.e., interpersonal facilitation). Specifically, people who had more collectivistic tendencies were more positively influenced by a paternalistic leader than people who had low collectivistic tendencies in both countries. However, individualism did not have any moderating effects on the relationship between empowering leadership style and self-oriented OCB (i.e., job dedication). Our findings are relevant for understanding the effects of leadership styles and cultural orientations on self- versus other-oriented OCB in Turkey and the Netherlands

    Activated sampling in complex materials at finite temperature: the properly-obeying-probability activation-relaxation technique

    While the dynamics of many complex systems is dominated by activated events, there are very few simulation methods that take advantage of this fact. Most of these procedures are restricted to relatively simple systems or, as with the activation-relaxation technique (ART), sample the conformation space efficiently at the cost of a correct thermodynamical description. We present here an extension of ART, the properly-obeying-probability ART (POP-ART), that obeys detailed balance and samples correctly the thermodynamic ensemble. Testing POP-ART on two model systems, a vacancy and an interstitial in crystalline silicon, we show that this method recovers the proper thermodynamical weights associated with the various accessible states and is significantly faster than MD in the diffusion of a vacancy below 700 K.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

    Spin Motion in Electron Transmission through Ultrathin Ferromagnetic Films Accessed by Photoelectron Spectroscopy

    Ab initio and model calculations demonstrate that the spin motion of electrons transmitted through ferromagnetic films can be analyzed in detail by means of angle- and spin-resolved core-level photoelectron spectroscopy. The spin motion appears as precession of the photoelectron spin polarization around and as relaxation towards the magnetization direction. In a systematic study for ultrathin Fe films on Pd(001) we elucidate its dependence on the Fe film thickness and on the Fe electronic structure. In addition to elastic and inelastic scattering, the effect of band gaps on the spin motion is addressed in particular.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Mating Behavior of a Deep-Sea Squid Revealed by in situ Videography and the Study of Archived Specimens

    The mating behavior of deep-sea squids is shrouded in mystery. The squids for which mating has been observed use a hectocotylus, a modified arm, for the transfer of sperm packets called spermatophores. However, many deep-sea squid species lack a hectocotylus. We present the first in situ observations of mating behavior in a deep-sea squid that has no hectocotylus but instead uses an elongated terminal organ for the transfer of spermatangia, which are released from the spermatophores and burrow deeply into the female tissue. With remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), we observed two mating pairs of the deep-sea squid Pholidoteuthis adami in the Gulf of Mexico. The male adopted a peculiar position during mating, with its ventral side up and its posterior mantle above the female's head. While the male held the female in what looked like a firm grip, we observed the long terminal organ extending through the funnel of the male, contacting the female dorsal mantle. Examinations of museum specimens show that spermatangia burrow from the outer dorsal mantle into the inner dorsal mantle. This combination of serendipitous in situ observations and archived specimens can be a powerful tool for understanding the behavior of deep-sea animals

    Grey-scale morphology based on fuzzy logic

    There exist several methods to extend binary morphology to grey-scale images. One of these methods is based on fuzzy logic and fuzzy set theory. Another approach starts from the complete lattice framework for morphology and the theory of adjunctions. In this paper, both approaches are combined. The basic idea is to use (fuzzy) conjunctions and implications which are adjoint in the definition of dilations and erosions, respectively. This gives rise to a large class of morphological operators for grey-scale images. It turns out that this class includes the often used grey-scale Minkowski addition and subtraction

    Origin of Rashba-splitting in the quantized subbands at Bi2Se3 surface

    We study the band structure of the Bi2Se3\text{Bi}_2\text{Se}_3 topological insulator (111) surface using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We examine the situation where two sets of quantized subbands exhibiting different Rashba spin-splitting are created via bending of the conduction (CB) and the valence (VB) bands at the surface. While the CB subbands are strongly Rashba spin-split, the VB subbands do not exhibit clear spin-splitting. We find that CB and VB experience similar band bending magnitudes, which means, a spin-splitting discrepancy due to different surface potential gradients can be excluded. On the other hand, by comparing the experimental band structure to first principles LMTO band structure calculations, we find that the strongly spin-orbit coupled Bi 6pp orbitals dominate the orbital character of CB, whereas their admixture to VB is rather small. The spin-splitting discrepancy is, therefore, traced back to the difference in spin-orbit coupling between CB and VB in the respective subbands' regions
